NICA adds Oregon League!

It is with great excitement we are able to share with everyone that Oregon has been awarded a league with the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). NICA, is a 503(c) non-profit organization founded in 2009. Currently there are 22 state and regional leagues across the country with 14,500 student-athletes from nearly 800 high schools. Ed Fischer of Camas Bike and Sport and Robert Ping have worked together over the last few years to bring awareness to the community and gain the support necessary for an Oregon league to be realized. Oregon and SW Washington have an amazing cycling community that is ideal to support and foster the growth of youth mountain biking. Teams in SW Washington can fall under the umbrella of the Oregon league due to the proximity of the communities to Portland. This is an interscholastic student mountain biking league that is open to middle school and high school students (6th-12th grade) of all skills and abilities.

Heather Wolfgang has been named Director of the Oregon League. Heather comes from Northern California and has been with the NICA Norcal League for several years. She brings a great deal of experience to the league and with the support of the leadership board will launch this league in the Summer/Fall 2018. Yes, you read that right! This will be a Summer/Fall league and we need your support! The Oregon League is a volunteer based organization that is dependent on the community to be actively involved. Many people we have talked with over the years have said they wanted to have a league and would be involved when the time comes….the time has come.  There are a variety of ways to support the league and many volunteer opportunities are available. Volunteers are needed for coaching, event support, logistical support, fundraising, and so much more. Summer will be here before we know it and your help is needed now. Please visit for more information on coaching, volunteering, donating and sponsorship opportunities. You can also contact Heather Wolfgang directly at

Our student mountain bike team, the Lacamas Freedom Riders, will be participating in the Oregon League in 2018.  For the 2015 and 2016 season this team operated as the first Indie Club, a NICA Independent Club, that participated in races on the Oregon Junior MTB Series. This year we will be able to participate with NICA as a composite team at the NICA Oregon League race series. A composite team is a team that is not directly associated with one specific school, however the goal is to get more middle school and high school teams in the area that operate through their respective schools. If you have a son/daughter that would like to participate on the team or if you know anyone that would like to be involved in coaching or team support please email us at

Stay tuned, as there is much more info to come. Read the full press release.
